SofM worked alongside an electricity transmission network operator to develop a comprehensive technology strategy and roadmap.

Situation

A leading electricity transmission network operator was at a critical point in its technological evolution. The company owns and operates the transmission network in a region known for its pioneering approach to renewable power generation.

As the energy landscape rapidly evolves towards more sustainable solutions, the company recognised the need for a comprehensive technology strategy to support this transition, while continuing to deliver safe and reliable energy across metropolitan, regional, and remote areas.

Challenge

The client faced several challenges:

  • Lack of integrated strategy: The organisation had never developed a whole-of-business technology strategy, portfolio and roadmap. This made it difficult to align technology initiatives with strategic priorities.
  • Application landscape uncertainty: There was limited understanding of how the current applications landscape supported business objectives, making it challenging to identify gaps and improvement opportunities.
  • Regulatory compliance: As an energy transmission operator, any technological changes must align with strict regulatory requirements, funding constraints, and ensure continued reliability of service.
  • Renewable energy transition: The strategy must support the company’s crucial role in enabling the transition to renewable power generation.

What we did

SofM implemented a comprehensive, strategic approach to address these challenges:

  • Strategy development: We jointly developed the client’s first whole-of-business technology strategy and roadmap, ensuring alignment with business objectives and the energy sector’s evolving needs.
  • Industry-specific models: We leveraged our expertise to develop and apply an industry specific maturity and capability model, tailored to the energy sector.
  • Enterprise architecture: We developed a business, application, and data architecture framework indicating key areas for improvement.
  • Portfolio development: We created an aligned portfolio of initiatives designed to achieve the strategic goals and help secure the required funding.
  • Stakeholder engagement: We facilitated engagement with executive and operational stakeholders to ensure buy-in and alignment across the organisation.

Outcome

This outputs of our work have positioned the client to navigate the complex challenges of the evolving energy sector:

  • Comprehensive strategy: The client’s first whole-of-business technology strategy and enterprise architecture, provided a clear vision for technological evolution.
  • Funding readiness: The roadmap of initiatives formed the basis for funding submissions to the regulator, enabling the company to secure key resources.
  • Business-first decision making: The strategy established a framework for technology decisions driven by business outcomes rather than technical considerations alone.
  • Enhanced asset management: The strategy outlined pathways to improve the applications landscape, supporting safe and reliable asset management and network operations.
  • Support for renewable transition: The client was better placed to support the transition to renewable power generation, aligning with broader industry and societal goals.
