SofM helped a federal government agency to transform outdated data systems into a strategic asset, unlocking operational efficiencies and enabling superior customer service.

Situation

A large federal government agency was experiencing significant growth and operational challenges.

As the organisation expanded their services and user base, it became increasingly clear that the approach to data management was not keeping pace with their evolving needs.

The agency knew that to reach its strategic goals and continue providing excellent service, it needed to strengthen its data maturity and leverage information more effectively to deliver better insights into customers, products, and services.

Challenge

The agency faced several challenges in improving its data management capabilities:

  • Limited data understanding: There was a general lack of awareness and maturity across the business regarding best practices, including the concept of data ownership and its potential for improving operations and decision-making.
  • Undefined data strategy and goals: No clear data strategy or goals led to inconsistent data practices across departments. As a statutory authority handling sensitive data, a standardised approach was required to ensure compliance.
  • Legacy systems: The organisation’s growth had outpaced its data infrastructure, resulting in siloed data sources and inconsistent data quality, exacerbated by complex legacy systems.

What we did

SofM worked alongside the client to conduct a data maturity assessment across multiple areas and reviewed practices across the data landscape. From this, SofM identified barriers and opportunities for improvement against the DMBOK2 framework.

A data maturity roadmap was created, outlining key initiatives to drive data maturity and build capability across the organisation.

Outcome

The data maturity assessment and roadmap development initiative has positioned the authority to enhance its data management capabilities significantly. By providing a clear understanding of current capabilities and a structured path for improvement, the agency is now equipped to leverage data as a strategic asset. The key outcomes were:

  • Data maturity and governance: The authority gained a clear, objective view of the current data maturity and a prioritised roadmap for improving data management. Additionally, strengthened data governance and compliance initiatives reduced regulatory risks.
  • Operational efficiencies: Enhanced data management practices are expected to reduce inconsistencies and improve data accessibility, boosting operational efficiency.
  • Customer-centric improvements: Better data management and analytics capabilities will allow the authority to gain deeper insights into customer needs and behaviours, leading to improved service delivery.
