SofM helped a federal regulator unify 31 legacy business registers into one modern platform, revolutionising cross-agency collaboration and service delivery.

Situation

A large federal regulatory body was kicking off a significant government initiative to modernise and streamline business registration processes.

The project aimed to consolidate 31 business registers operated by the regulator onto a single, modern technology platform.

This new platform was to be operated by the national taxation office, representing a major shift in how business information was managed and accessed across government agencies.

Challenge

The government agency faced several challenges regarding people, technology and data:

  • Complex legacy systems: There were 31 outdated registers that needed to be integrated, and data migrated, which was highly complex.
  • Technology selection: Choosing the right technology platform was critical for the project’s success.
  • Data integrity: Ensuring accurate and consistent data during consolidation was essential.
  • Cross-agency collaboration: Coordination was required across multiple government agencies, each with different processes and stakeholders.

What we did

The client was seeking an experienced partner to provide Project Management and Project Management Office (PMO) services as part of a blended, cross-functional team to deliver this significant initiative.

We worked with the regulator to establish the program structure, provide key resources and mobilise the program.

This was achieved by building robust and repeatable delivery processes in a hybrid agile delivery environment, as well as by establishing robust program governance, reporting, and controls to build confidence in the program’s ability to deliver.

Outcome

Our strategic approach enabled the successful delivery of the Business Registers Modernisation initiative, positioning the regulatory body at the forefront of government service modernisation.

By rapidly mobilising the program, fostering inter-agency collaboration, and implementing strong governance, reporting and controls, we helped build confidence in the program’s ability to deliver.

We delivered a consistent commercial structure with the flexibility to be ‘right-sized’ in terms of resourcing and value for money.
